Important considerations

  • Motor loads, pumps, compressors, elevators, and equipment with high starting current may require significantly higher final generator capacity.
  • Nonlinear loads such as UPS, VFD, rectifiers, and data equipment may require harmonic and load characteristic review. This calculator does not calculate those effects yet.

Preliminary estimate only

This tool is designed for preliminary capacity estimation. Final diesel generator selection should consider load type, starting current, environmental conditions, altitude, temperature, operating pattern, and manufacturer specifications.

What is kW?

kW is active power: the useful electrical power consumed by the load.

What is kVA?

kVA is apparent power and is commonly used to express generator electrical capacity.

What is Power Factor?

Power Factor links active power and apparent power. Lower PF means more kVA is needed for the same kW.

Why starting current matters?

Some loads draw high current at startup, so the generator must be reviewed against starting behavior, not only steady operation.
